As such, it is important that as the site owner, you must treat each and one of them with utmost importance. Setting up this nifty gadget on your site is very easy. And if you’re the type of person who wants to do things that aren’t much of a hassle, then you’re surely going to love this. Here’s how…

First you need to have a Chatwing account. You can gain one by registering at the site. It’ll only ask for a valid e-mail, a password, and agreeing to their policies (click on the box) so it’s surely hassle-free.

The next step is choosing how to use your chatbox. You can either use it directly, or embed it in your site, or use a popout icon that will show the chatroom in another window once clicked. Since you’r embedding the chatroom as a whole, click on the Embedding Options tab. You’ll see a scale which you’ll need to use if you want to adjust the size of the chatroom when it goes live on your site.

After that, you’ll need to copy the code below the adjustment scale – this is the html code for the chatbox. Paste the code into your site’s widget section (if it has one) or paste it directly as a new post (though this doesn’t work with free wordpress sites). After saving your progress, your site will have chatroom for you and your readers to use.

Why bloggers should not be on every other social networking sites!

This is the decade where everyone is talking about branding, building online-reputation and gaining a huge fan following to increase internet visibility. It's a common notion that is spread across the web like a wild fire that you need to exist on every other social networking site to market your content and generate leads to the products or increase traffic to your blog.

However, this might not be "your" requirement at all! But how do you know if you really need to show up on most of the existing social networking site or not? Let's begin by answering some of these simple yet complicated questions.

1) Why do you feel the need to make your social media presence? What is your purpose?

Be clear of your purpose. List out all the points that you think make you qualify to register on all the or at-least most of the social networking sites. You may be selling products or marketing affiliates or seeking traffic to your website or blog or may be you are doing non of the these. Just come up with your list to be clear of your purpose for registering on any social media.

You will soon realize that you have little time and no purpose to get an account on many social sites.

2) Do you know who are your customers or blog audience?

Analyzing the sex, age, country or work background of your blog audience is crucial. This is not only helpful in generating the content for your target audience but also lead you to the right marketing strategy and picking the right social networking site to begin your journey.

For example: If you are writing for women or parents then "Pinterest" would be your best option to consider other than some generic social networking (Facebook, Google+, StumbleUpon, twitter, ...) sites you may already be active on.

3) Have you hired any social media manager (or other staff) or intend to do so?

If you are an one man army who creates content/products and also markets them then you might want to strictly monitor your steps. Doing all the things alone will not only eat up your time but also can be very stressful to manage. Unless you have hired a social media manager who efficiently takes care of all your social media updates and marketing you better stay out of getting rolled up in too many social networking sites. You have every chance of loosing focus on content creation and hurt your source, your blog.

4) Is your online presence your day job or is it another source of income or an hobby?

If its your only source of income and you believe you have all the energy to put and also you think you can do just about anything to make your blog popular then you may think of joining more than five social sites. However, if you lack this kind of zeal and you have a day job to finish then this might not be the right thing for you to do. Too much will only spoil your online reputation not being able to keep all the sites updated.

It's important to find answers to all these questions before you decide to register your name or brand on all the social networking sites. There are many constraints that you may have to face in future and the biggest of them all is the time constraint. It is always better not to begin something you cannot manage rather than starting it and not being able to stick to your commitments.

Social media presence is very important for any blogger to generate traffic and build audience for the blog. But trying on too many social networking sites may do more bad than doing any good.

  • Being on every other social site gets you easily distracted.
  • As part of social media presence you also need to respond to your followers' comments and direct messages, think of your time.
  • You are basically taking off your focus from your main job i.e. blogging.
  • The more the number of social media sites you are active on the more the need to keep yourself abreast of latest happenings and inclusions to those sites. This can be good (if you blog about marketing and social media) or bad depending on your requirements.
Registering on some of the very popular networking sites which can almost be termed as Generic social sites is no doubt necessary. But my only advice is about choosing the right secondary or specific (as I would like to term it) social sites. Be picky before registering on any social media and stick to the type of social media which might have the right followers as your blog audience.

If you are a beginner or if you are thinking of increasing your social media horizons then generic social sites are the best to start with. Facebook, Google Plus, Twitter, StumbleUpon, etc are few such sites that you just cannot miss!

Do you believe in quantity over quality? How many of the social networking sites you are active on and which are they? Do tell us...

Image advice for bloggers

Image advice for bloggers
Courtesy: pixbox77 at FreeDigitalPhotos.net

Any blogger will acknowledge that their 500-1000 words of text sometimes just isn't enough. Whether it's seconds after accessing the page or after scanning through four paragraphs of unbroken text, some readers are heavily influenced by presentation. It's a blogger's duty, therefore, to compliment their entry with engaging themes, fonts and, perhaps most importantly, a few carefully-placed images.

Image selecting has become a staple for amateur and professional writers around the world as it allows them to quickly convey a message. Some won't even start their text before listing a thought-provoking headline and an image below. That's right, they believe people want to be told exactly what they're about to read before reading it. The text then expands on this point and aims to bring an individual's view to the fore.

However, as with most things, there are ways to image placement well and there are ways to do it not so well. Here's a little quality guide for bloggers seeking their own screening process.

1) Relevance > style

A quick scan through your stock image provider's library will reveal some quite breathtaking captures. The only problem is, most of them will have absolutely nothing to do with your topic, target audience or blog. Going for style over relevance will only leave your audience confused by the text that follows. Images serve as a vital component in your blog, breaking up the text and saving you hundreds of words (thousands, if you live by the well-known phrase) explaining a particular event or setting. Look for a natural connection between text and image to help your piece flow.

2) If you’re serious about blogging, always outsource

Think about all the time you spend retouching skin blemishes, removing a speck on the camera lens, injecting some much needed vibrancy into the photo. This could have been spent fine-tuning your article, focusing on your actual duty as a blog writer. You should be leaving the additional fields to the professionals.

Stock photos will give you all the quality you need without the so-called obligatory purchase of a pricey SLR. Bloggers feel they need to take their own high-res images to make their piece all the more authentic, but there's no sign above your work saying 'I took this' unless you put it there yourself. Stock photos and downloaded themes save both time and money when it comes to creating an engaging space on the web. Use them.

3) Avoid boring, generic selections

Easier said than done, this one. You'll only realise how boring and generic your images really are by taking a good look around the competition. Judging by the evidence, website designers think a picture of a laughing family, strolling along an English countryside, looking at each other with glee are ideal for, say, an article on hill climbing. In reality, they turn people off.

In this instance you'd be much better off searching for an awe-inspiring picture of the location in question, maybe the matter at hand. This will relate specifically to your article and will encourage people to read on. The pictures that command attention will also ensure that your text isn't being ignored and that users don't sift through your piece. With the number of high quality selections available, you shouldn't settle for anything less.

Two Indian bloggers thrased at Samsung's Mobiler's IFA, Berlin!

When the position of moon and stars are just not in favor, things are always bound to go wrong. After the great battle between two tech giants Apple and Samsung where the verdict went against Samsung with $1Billion fine towards patent infringement in USA court Samsung is back in news again. Clinton Jeff, blogger from India of unleashthephones.com fame is one of those two victims in Samsung’s Mob!lers event in Berlin who were threatened by Samsung! According to Clinton Jeff, he and a fellow blogger (who chose to remain anonymous) were invited to Samsung’s Mob!lers IFA Berlin, Germany and were covered for the flight tickets and Hotel accommodation. Jeff said, they were asked by the company if they were attending the event as Samsung’s promoters or reporters and it was made clear that the two would attend the same as reporters only.

The two bloggers were forced to jump into Samsung’s shoes and promote their devices failing which, the two would be denied of return tickets and Hotel stay. The two bloggers were flown by the company and abandoned them in a foreign country away from home.

Advantage Nokia: Nokia quickly made a move to rescue the two by providing them return tickets and made the Hotel arrangements.

Samsung, realizing the damage caused to the image of the company and the products apologized to Jeff. The Samsung representative said:
I would like to reach out to you and deeply apologize to you for your experience in Berlin at IFA. We put you through undue hardship and we are trying to rectify the situation.
and more where as the company framed the whole incident to be a misunderstanding in public statement creating a huge difference with the two statements!
Samsung Mob!lers is a voluntary community of active Samsung mobile device users, who are offered the opportunity to participate in our marketing events across the world. At these events, all activities they undertake are on a voluntary basis. No activities are forced upon them.

We regret there was a misunderstanding between the Samsung Mob!lers coordinators and the relevant blogger, as we understand he was not sufficiently briefed on the nature of Samsung Mob!lers’ activities at IFA 2012. We have been attempting to get in touch with him.

We respect the independence of bloggers to publish their own stories".
Well, the wink-wink game did not work out for Samsung and Nokia rightly grabbed the PR opportunity! And jeff says this on twitter:

What do you think, bloggers need to be more cautious?

Is your blog’s name ‘Advertising mania’!

Money speaks, money wins and money matters; but!

Let us together begin our talk by bringing the goodness about you and your blog.

Your blog- I know you have a nice blog, killer content, and interesting niche. Your blog has a very good Page rank, Alexa rank and Moz rank. Your blog is search engine optimized. It has a very good number of subscribers, Bravo.

About you- You are a self-made blogger earning the upper four digit income in dollars. Your content is so popular that you have a great fan following on various social networking sites like google+, facebook, twitter, tumblr, and more. You are sincere and determined blogger working hard to keep up the expectations.

I like to congratulate you; you are the micro-entrepreneur.

Ads on in-between the posts and pop ad before home page

Okay, let’s come to the most important part of your blog without which you are nothing, your readers and your loyal readers (I know you just read readers and loyal readers, I come to it later).
  •  What have you been doing to satisfy your readers apart from giving them awesome content?
  • Did you ever wonder about your blog’s user experience?
Here we go to the real part of this conversation, the problem of your blog named ‘Advertising mania’.

Come again, that’s not your blog?

But I am sure that is your blog. I am your reader and I have named it as ‘Advertising mania’.
  • You have an ad on your header, that’s okay.
  • You have ads on your side bar but even that is fine.
  • You have ads at the end of every post, which is bearable.
  • You have ads in-between the post, which is becoming a little too much.
  • You have ads linked up to the keywords in every other sentences, are you testing my patience?
  • You have ad popping up the screen even before I have reached your home page, now I feel like closing the tab of your blog in the browser.
Please, I want to breathe but I am feeling short of open space!

I understand the fact that you are a blogger and you need rewards for delivering awesome content. I also agree that monetizing your blog is your right. I know, maybe this is the whole source of income for you and you are a full time blogger.

But, aren’t you getting a little greedy over money? You are some times confusing me by mixing the content and ads together. Some times you are eating up my time by those unnecessary pop-ups.

Let us take a scenario where you are watching your favourite TV show or a movie; you want to watch it full but you don’t have much time left.

The channel needs to make money for the services they provide. If ads keep interrupting you every five minutes, how do you feel, isn’t that frustrating?

Even the channels these days are worried about new channels mushrooming every now and then and giving them tough competition. That is why they have started the concept of one break movie, no break movie and some of the channels even show the countdown as ‘show will be back in- !! mins/sec’.

They have understood the meaning of ‘turning off their viewers'- it’s simple that the viewers will move on to other channel.

I don’t need to explain you about the growing blogosphere. We all are aware of the fact that there are 100’s of blogs on the same niche if not 1000’s. And it is growing every day.

So, your readers have a choice, okay!

Your readers get a bad impression on their first visit! Your loyal and regular readers have mean while found other blogs which have good content and are also clutter free (without the hurdles of ads when not necessary). These blogs have promising user experience.

Your loyal readers now have a choice to opt out from visiting your blog.

Take me for granted, I am not at all against blog monetizing but please not at the cost of losing your readers!

So come on tell me what are you going to do about these ads? I cannot give you tips on how many ads you need to display. It’s up to you; you have to decide on it depending on your income requirements and your priorities on your blog.

But yes, I would like to tell you one thing, the pop ups irritate a lot. Try to keep the ads that do not force your readers to click on it by peeping in unwanted places. Choosing the right location for ads on your blog is what I am asking you to do.

Do you get me! Tell me what you are doing to act upon the menace so that I can visit your blog very often.
