Freedom was not all that free in past for a woman even in free India. Today we are talking about women empowerment and gender equality but only a class of this society is able to see the light. A major population of women are struggling and facing gender bias and discrimination. Our very own glamorous world of cinemas the B-town is no exception.
The scenario in Indian cinema was like heroines once got married were out of business and once they had a baby they were out of career. The only way to get a role was to play a mom or an aunt and if not these then better make a career transition or settle for a happy homemaker tag.
Surprisingly it's not the case today. At-least in bollywood women are really getting empowered! We saw Kajol and Madhuri making a comeback in lead roles after marriage. One succeeded and the other did not make it to the box office hits. Then the same two returned as mommies, one has proved and the other is still trying to make it.
Then there was Mallika Arora Khan, who declared that she would not make it as a lead in a film but make some small appearances. She looks stunning and sexy as a mom yet took her career as a part time job (the way I would like to address it). In one of the music channels she made it to the headlines that, after the item number munni bhai in the movie Dabaang she has charged 1.75cr for anarkali disco chali leaving behind the jaleebi bai fame Mallika Sherawat who has charged 1.25cr for an item song recently.
Are the Indian audience really growing up giving way for moms as item girls? I am glad at-least a few women are still carrying the glam-tag even after having babies.
A few others like Juhi Chawla are managing to bag decent roles in movies. And some others like Raveena Tandon and Sonali Bendre are doing well on small screens.
One among others is Karishma Kapoor who is making a comeback in a lead role in the movie Dangerous Ishq after her appearance on the small screen as judge of a reality show. A mom in bollywood in the lead of a love story sounds good.
And then there are a few b-town moms who make a career change like the one Twinkle Kanna who is now a successful interior designer. And more bollywood moms are up in queue who hopefully will make their entry in the film industry. First comes the Miss world Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, then Lara Dutta, Shilpa Shetty, Amrita Arora..... and the list continues.
I would like to believe that the male counter parts in our society are now accepting women for their roles other than wives and mothers. If a woman can be sexy at her 40s as moms to men, then I guess she can be anything in this world! There are a plenty of questions to be answered about women really getting the better positions in the male dominated world. But, any little change in the mindset of the society in favour of women is a welcome change. Because when a hero becomes a father there are no questions regarding his career but when a heroine becomes a mother there is always a question of she coming back to business.
