February 1, 2003 was a black day for the whole world. It was the end of seven geniuses who were the super power faculties on earth. India in particular mourned this day on loosing her proud daughter called KC.
A gorgeous lady was conceived in 1975 in California. She was born in 1981 and named after Boston based Sloop-Columbia as Columbia. She went on growing stronger and stronger with every test she passed and achieved huge success. The missions she accomplished were STS-1 to STS-107. She was none other than the famous Space Shuttle Columbia. During her last mission i.e STS-107, she happened to carry a crew of seven who were the best among the living! Five of the crew members were male David Brown, Rick Husband, Ilan Ramon , Michael Anderson, Willie McCool and two were females Kalpana Chawla and Laurel Clark.

Among the two brave ladies Kalpana Chawla is the one whom Indians are proud of. She not only dreamed big and impossible but also fulfilled it. She aimed to fly and she did.
DOB- July 1, 1961
Place- Karnal, Haryana, India
Occupation- Astronaut, NASA
Kalpana was the first Indian woman and the second person of Indian origin to fly in the space. Breaking all the taboos of the Indian Society against the so called weaker sex, she went on par and climbed the ladder of success graduating in B.E in aeronautical engineering. Who could dare stop her from flying in the sky? Her tremendous intellectual capability with the combination of bravery made her the Brave-llectual KC!
Just a engineering degree was not all that she was aiming for. She future moved to USA and obtained a M.S. degree in aerospace engineering. This was not all. She earned a second M.S. degree in 1986 and a Ph.D. in aerospace engineering. Then she joined NASA and her career took off and landed as an astronaut. Apart from this she had the ability to fly varieties of planes. Kalpana Chawla was called as KC by her friends.
She had the aim which was stars away for others. She was aiming to reach the height were even a man could not imagine to reach. She had the ability to flee people with a commercial pilot's license at hand. KC dreamt to explore the unexplored and gave the hope to woman to dream. She achieved the unachievable and inspired woman to chase their dreams. She not only proved her intellectual capabilities but also proved her physical abilities to cope with the challenges by staying in the space for more than 30 days. She mis-proved that women were physically weak.
It was not just the achievement of KC but also an achievement for her parents and in particular her mother. It was the achievement of womanhood. Surviving all the odds in eighties especially in India for a woman is a achievement in itself. Her mother would have faced challenges at every stage and yet she believed in her daughter and her dreams. Sustaining all the pressure from the society and relatives her mother(would have) pushed her daughter to reach the stars. KC's mother must be really proud of her unbelievable daughter. And KC had all the reason to thank her mother who stood behind the scene and encouraged her to move on.
KC was born ready to fly. Unfortunate we are to loose such a brave soul. February 1, 2003 on her way back to earth after completing her second mission successfully, Columbia had a disastrous end. All the seven crew members lost their lives and become one among the stars and they still continue to twinkle in our minds. Kalpana, though departed now, will always be an inspiration to the feminity. She will always be the dream of a Indian woman. She will always be the hope, the courage, the intellect, the role model and the symbol of woman power.
March 8, 2011 is the day when we all are celebrating 100th women's international day. At the same time on February 1, 2011 it was the eighth death anniversary of KC. This is a tribute to Kalpana Chawla who remains in every heart on this earth for ever.
My feminspiration is KC and her life is worth admiring. She was the example of what is said as- "impossible is nothing as the word itself says I (a)m possible".
